GREEN BAY, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team scored two second-half goals, and withheld a late UW-Green Bay charge, to pick up a 2-1 victory in the Horizon League opener for both teams Friday evening in Green Bay. The Panthers (3-4-2, 1-0-0 Horizon) won its eighth-straight league opener, while picking up their second-straight win over the Phoenix (3-5-1, 0-1-0 Horizon).

Senior Katie Campion tallied the game-winner in the 80th minute, on a second-phase attack after a UWM corner kick. Sophomore Claire Pignet took the Milwaukee corner, before the Phoenix cleared the ball back out to her feet. Pignet sent a second cross to the far post, where Campion one-timed a shot past UW-Green Bay keeper Brooke Wikgren for a 2-0 lead.

"Going into the second half, Katie Campion was generating well for us on the left side," head coach Michael Moynihan said. "She put some good shots on net and came up with the goal for us late."

The Panthers broke a scoreless tie in the 60th minute, when freshman Jodi Klagos found the back of the net off senior Janice McGann's cross. McGann began the play in the midfield and played a give-and-go into the corner with sophomore Stacey Faude. McGann crossed the Faude pass to Klagos, who chipped the keeper from 12 yards out.

UW-Green Bay was the aggressor in the early portion of the second half, but was unable to mount any substantial threats on the goal. Midway through the frame, UWM took control of the match and launched nine shots in the frame, pushing its lead to 2-0 with just over eight minutes remaining in the match.

The score was made 2-1 in the 85th minute, when Sarah Oligney scored unassisted to dodge the shutout. UW-Green Bay made offensive substitutions and was aggressive trying to go forward, but was unable to score the equalizer.

Milwaukee gained the edge in the first half, generating a number of scoring opportunities in a match played mostly in the midfield. The Panthers outshot UW-Green Bay, 6-4, for the frame, including a pair of well-struck shots on goal by Campion and sophomore Amanda Winn.

Meanwhile, UWM stymied the Phoenix attack in front of junior goalkeeper Molly Duffy, making her first collegiate appearance in the nets. Duffy stopped two shots before halftime, including in the 29th minute, when she came off her line to make a point-blank save.

Duffy got the start in place of freshman Erin Kane, who missed her first game due to an elbow injury suffered in practice. She is listed day-to-day after playing every minute of the season entering the game.

"The good thing about Molly's performance was that it emphasized our depth," Moynihan said. "We found out four hours before the game that we would be without our starting goalkeeper (Erin Kane). Duffy played well and made key saves, including a breakaway."

The Madison native finished with four saves on the night, including a sprawling save in the 61st minute. Her counterpart, Wikgren, stopped two shots for Green Bay. For the match, the Panthers outshot the Phoenix, 15-11, and gained the advantage in corners, 5-1. UWM was also called for seven more fouls (19-12), including a 10-4 count in the second half.

"Green Bay is a tough place to play. Any time you can go up there and get a win is great," Moynihan said. "Being picked to win the league for the sixth-straight year puts pressure on us, with our young team. Today was a good sign and it built up to a good start to the league season."

The Panthers return to action Sunday, hosting Illinois State at Engelmann Field. Kick off is set for 11:30 a.m.
