MILWAUKEE, Wis. -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team fell to Northwestern, 1-0, Friday evening at Marquette's Valley Field. The game was the first of the 2005 Howard Johnson Milwaukee Cup, as well as the season opener for both teams.
"Four of our projected starters were out with injury tonight but our players really competed well, which says something about our depth," head coach Michael Moynihan said. "It was a good defensive effort, there was good organization in our back line."
Northwestern scored the game's lone goal in the 61st minute. The Wildcats forced a UWM turnover in UWM's defensive third. Jenny Dunn, who came away with the ball, left a ball for Jeanette Lorm. Lorm fired a shot from 20 yards and found the back of the net, far post, for the score.
"Their one goal came after a set piece and was in transition," Moynihan said. "We did not allow many chances until we were stretched trying to get the goal back."
UWM fought feverishly to score the equalizer in the closing minutes, but was unable to manage a shot on goal. Both teams posted eight shots for the match, while NU had the 3-2 edge in corner kicks and committed three more fouls (9-6).
"We need to find a way to win these close games," Moynihan said. "It's a very winable game for us. Even though the shots were even, we still had enough quality chances to come away with a win."
The first half was evenly matched, with neither team generating many scoring opportunities. Milwaukee captured a 5-4 shot advantage, while both teams forced one corner kick and committed three fouls. The Panthers' best first half attack came when Joanna Severson rifled a shot over the crossbar, one-timing a Beth Steuer pass from 20 yards out.
Freshman Erin Kane started in goal for the Panthers, stopping three shots in her collegiate debut. Whitney Jones made three saves to pick up the shutout for the Wildcats.
Action at the Milwaukee Cup continues Sunday at Engelmann Field. The Panthers take on No. 13 Illinois at 2:30 p.m. Marquette and Northwestern square off in the day's first game, beginning at noon.
