MILWAUKEE - Theresa Coughlin had 28 kills to lead Marquette to a 30-25, 25-30, 30-28, 30-24 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Tuesday night at the Klotsche Center.

The non-league loss snaps a 10-match winning streak for the Panthers (17-8), who are in first place in the Horizon League.

Melissa David had 18 kills to lead UWM, which also got 13 kills from Cheryl Hegemann and 11 kills from Rachel Kuebbing.

The Golden Eagles (14-10) did make 40 hitting errors and hit just .156 for the match, but the Panthers hit just .141 and had 31 errors of their own.

"They were making errors and we didn't take advantage," UWM head coach Kathy Litzau said. "Marquette was the best outside hitting team we have seen in a month and they did a good job of exposing some of our weaknesses. But, now we can work on those as we head into the next few important weeks."

Marquette controlled the first game, jumping to leads of 7-2, 14-8 and 20-13. UWM did eventually come back within a point at 25-24 but couldn't get over the hump. Two kills by Jenn Brown and a kill by Jamie Mueller then finished things off for MU.

UWM bounced right back in game two, jumping to a 17-11 lead following a kill by Hegemann. The Golden Eagles did trim the lead to 21-19 and again to 26-24, but the Panthers made the final push. A block by Jamie Gabrielsen and Sarah Moore, a Marquette error and a kill by Sarah Moore gave UWM the second frame and evened the match.

Game three was tight most of the way, with the Panthers grabbing a 20-17 lead on a kill by Kuebbing. Marquette bounced right back, though, scoring 10 of the next 14 points to build a 27-24 edge. UWM pulled within 28-27 and again within 29-28, but a kill by Coughlin wrapped things up.

The Golden Eagles then overcame an early disadvantage to take control in the fourth frame, quickly turning a 12-9 deficit into a 17-15 lead. The Panthers were still within two points at 23-21 after a kill by Hegemann, but the Golden Eagles ran away from there. Kills by Mueller and Kimberley Todd pushed the lead to 29-23 and another kill by Mueller gave Marquette the match.

UWM returns to action this weekend, playing at Youngstown State Friday night and Cleveland State Saturday afternoon.
