MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 14, 2005) - Six players scored goals as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team exploded for seven scores in defeating Youngstown State, 7-0, Friday afternoon at Engelmann Field. The Panthers (7-4-3, 4-0-1 Horizon) scored their most goals since 1997, as they outshot the Penguins (1-14, 1-3 Horizon) 36-2 on the day.

Freshman Sarah Teegarden led the way with two goals, while sophomores Amanda Winn and Joanna Severson tallied two assists apiece on the day.

In just the third minute, freshman Jodi Klagos scored the eventual game-winner to start the scoring. The first of three corner kick goals, sophomore Ginny Graczyk sent a corner to junior Taylor Powell. Powell's header was deflected to Klagos, who finished for her third goal of the season.

Milwaukee added two more goals before halftime, with freshman Bailey Briggs scoring in the 24th minute and Powell tallying a goal of her own in the 41st. On Briggs' goal, she received a pass from Severson and sent a lofting shot just under the cross bar, far post, from the corner of the penalty area. Powell's tally came off a back and forth play, that ended with her settling a pass from junior Molly Duffy and converting the close-range shot.

The Panthers came out of the gates passively, but still controlled the tempo of the match throughout the first half. UWM outshot Youngstown, 19-0, and forced all seven corner kicks, while being whistled for just one foul.

In the second half, Milwaukee played with more confidence, going at the Penguin defense and scoring four more times. Teegarden supplied the team's next two goals off back-to-back corner kicks from Winn. In the 47th minute, Winn's corner went far post and Teegarden finished with a diving header. Just four minutes later, the Batavia, Ill., native finished an identical corner kick, this time with a running header.

"Winn always has really good crosses, putting them into a good spot, so I didn't have to do much," Teegarden said. "We also had a lot of runs that took their players out of the box and that opened things up."

UWM did not relent, making it 6-0 on junior Stacey Faude's first goal of the season in the 66th minute and 7-0 on senior Katie Campion's third score of 2005 in the 82nd minute. Sophomore Sarah Freidel assisted on the Faude goal and Severson picked up her second helper of the match on Campion's.

"As the game went on, we played with more confidence, started to take people on, and scored goals," Teegarden said. "This definitely gives up confidence heading into a big rivalry game Sunday. We now have the mindset that we can score."

After the Panthers made it 4-0, YSU mounted its best offensive attack on the impending kick off. The Penguins made several passes before Roechelle Boone sent the team's first shot of the match wide of the goal. Milwaukee surrendered just one more shot, as freshman Erin Kane made a save on Brittny Humphrey's breakaway attempt late in the half.

For the match, the Panthers had substantial advantages in shots, 38-2, and corner kicks, 12-0. Just 13 fouls were called in the match, with 10 going against the visitors.

"We got the job done today," head coach Michael Moynihan said. "It was nice to give people a rest for Sunday (at Detroit). A lot of players got into the game, and when they came in, played well."

Kane picked up her seventh save of the season with her one save, while Caitlin Bestard stopped eight shots for YSU. Kane is just one shutout from tying the school record for shutouts in a season.

Milwaukee returns to action Sunday, with a crucial road match at Detroit. The Panthers (4-0-1) are ahead of the Titans (2-0-1) in the standings by two games in the win column, pending the outcome of tonight's UDM/Loyola contest. Kick off is scheduled for 11 a.m., central time, in what is a rematch of last season's league championship game.
