UWM Falls In Crosstown Matchup At Marquette

Box Score

Sept. 8, 2004

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Marquette University's Ashley George scored in the 49th minute, breaking a 0-0 tie, as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team fell to the Golden Eagles, 1-0, Wednesday night at Valley Field in a battle of crosstown rivals.

"It's frustrating, we have put ourselves in a position where the last three games, we could have won all of them," head coach Michael Moynihan said. "This game was probably the toughest of the three, but that is a lot of respect to Marquette."

After an evenly played opening frame, the Panther found difficulty making an offensive push in the second half, not getting a shot off until the 83rd minute, and finishing with three for the period. UWM's best opportunity to equalize came in the 89th minute when sophomore Taylor Powell's header went wide left.

Marquette broke open a scoreless game in the 49th minute when George floated a shot far post from the top of the penalty area. George had tracked down a loose ball after a flurry of Golden Eagle shots of a corner kick were cleared by Panther defenders.

"It's a one-goal game, we put ourselves into a position to get a result," Moynihan said. "Either team could have won. The difference in the game was Ashley George and a special play. She went at somebody, beat them and hit a great shot."

In the first half, neither team could mount much of an offensive attack, as Milwaukee had the 3-1 advantage in corner kicks, but conceded the 4-3 edge in shots.

The lone scoring opportunity of the frame came when Marquette's Michelle Martin hit the cross bar in the 34th minute. Martin launched her shot from 45 yards out and senior keeper Kerri St. Aubin tipped the ball of the bar and collected the loose ball to keep the game scoreless.

St. Aubin finished with three saves, while Milwaukee forced Golden Eagle keeper Katie Bissen to make one of her own. On the night, Marquette outshot UWM, 13-6, while the Panthers held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks and both teams committed 14 fouls.

"I thought overall we had a couple of good chances," Moynihan said. "(Elicia Scaife) in the first half and in the second half there was the corner kicks. That has to be out bread and butter, we look to capitalize on set pieces."

Milwaukee returns to action at Engelmann Field this weekend, hosting Boston College on Friday and DePaul on Sunday. Both games get underway at 4 p.m.
