Women's Soccer Plays To 2-2 Tie With Mississippi State

Box Score

Sept. 5, 2004

Box Score LAWRENCE, Kan. - Despite being outshot, 15-3, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team had leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but couldn't hold on, playing to a 2-2 tie against Mississippi State University, Sunday afternoon at the KUStore.com Crimson & Blue Invitational in Lawrence. The Panthers finished 0-1-1 at the tournament, and now sit at 1-2-1 on the season. "We started strong and faded," head coach Michael Moynihan said. "Our team was inconsistent, as we were hurting towards the end." A potential game-winning goal was waved off late in the game when junior Katie Campion found the back of the net. Campion had an initial shot stopped by the Bulldog goalkeeper, Stephanie Dallas. Campion took the rebound and put into the net, but had the goal disallowed when the referee ruled the keeper had possession. Campion's shot was one of three by the Panthers on the day, with the first two going for goals. UWM had taken a 1-0 lead in the second minute of the game. Campion beat her defender and served the ball in to junior Andrea Kramer. Kramer headed the pass past Dallas for her team-leading third goal of the year. After an MSU goal evened the game at one apiece, junior Elizabeth Chudy got her first goal of the season in the 35th minute. During a scramble in front of the net, Chudy got a shot off to make it 2-1. The play began when senior Sara Lewis brought the ball in from the corner and found Campion, who sent a pass in front of the net for Chudy. Of the 15 Bulldog shots, eight went on goal, with senior keeper Kerri St. Aubin stopping six. Mississippi State also had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks, while both teams received five offside calls. "I don't think the statistics reflect much of the game," Moynihan said. "There were stretches where (MSU) got off a lot of shots at once and S.A. came up with a lot of nice saves. We attacked alot more than (the stats) would indicate. We generated a lot of good chances with crosses and almost had a couple breakaways." Mississippi State got on the board in the 25th minute when Heidi Ondra converted a cross from 10 yards out. Just after halftime, Betty Ann Casey scored on a breakaway in the 53rd minute. Casey had a 1v1 with St. Aubin after a long pass over the Panther midfield. "It was a gutsy performance, but we could have done better," Moynihan added. "We easily could have come out of here with two wins, instead off a tie and loss. A lot of credit goes to our trainer Becky Worman, who did a good job of getting our players back in the game. It was tough, losing five players in 10 minutes on Friday, then playing through some injuries today." Kramer and junior defender Janice McGann were named to the Crimson & Blue Invitational All-Tournament team. McGann played all 210 minutes of the tournament, achoring the UWM defense. Milwaukee has little time to recooperate, traveling across town for an inter-city battle with Marquette University at Valley Field on Wednesday. The Panthers and Godlen Eagles kick off 7 p.m., before UWM returns home over the weekend to host #19 Boston College on Friday (4 p.m.) and DePaul on Sunday (4 p.m.). Both teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2003.
