MADISON, WIS. -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee had chance after chance but couldn't capitalize on the game-winner as it played to a 1-1 draw with the University of Evansville in men's soccer action here Sunday (Sept. 5). UWM outshot the Purple Aces 24-7 on the game but needed a last minute goal in regulation to tie the game. The Panthers finished the 2004 Big Toe Soccer Invitational with a 0-0-2 mark while Evansville moved to 1-0-1 on the season.
"To be quite honest, I'm surprised the game ever went this far," UWM head coach Louis Bennett said. "We took 24 shots and basically did everything but find the back of the net. For some reason we are really struggling to score and that is uncharacteristic of a UWM team. All we need is just a basic understanding and belief that we are going to score and it will happen."
The Panthers created numerous opportunities in the first half and outshot UE eight to zero in the frame. Chris Brisson saw a header bounce off the post in the 42nd minute while Neil Dombrowski's header was punched over the crossbar by Ace keeper Corey Southers later in the frame. UWM took five corner kicks in the first half to go with the eight shots while keeping possession for nearly the entire half.
Coach Bennett tried to mix-and-match the lineup in the second half to try to find the right combination for scoring a goal. Milwaukee again created the most chances with 10 second half shots but UE's counterattacking style also created some dangerous opportunities.
Freshman midfielder Troy Spielmann provided a spark in the second half as he had two shots in the first 15 minutes of the frame thwared by UE's Southers. Milwaukee had two more golden opportunities to score in the second half but Zeke Dombrowski's open header sailed high while Billy Meier whiffed on a shot inside the six-yard box with under seven minutes to play.
The patient Aces eventually struck first and looked to put the game away with a score in the 85th minute. Striker Dan Broxup collected a Marc Burch pass on the left wing and, after a few moves, rifled a shot into the upper right hand corner from 20 yards out.
Milwaukee continued to press forward and scored the equalizer in the final minute of regulation. Broxup was issued a yellow card with 44 seconds remaining which stopped the clock. Panther keeper Kirk Thode played the ball to Khaled-El Ahmad who served a long pass into the penalty area. Steve Sperl then headed a beautiful ball across the goal mouth to an awaiting Antou Jallow who headed home the game-tying goal with :32 seconds left on the clock.
"Steve Sperl just had a fabulous assist on that goal," Bennett added. "He battled, battled, and battled all day and then comes up with a huge play. He made the play happen and all Antou had to do was head it in."
In overtime, Jallow took two shots on goal in the first five minutes which were saved by Southers while Kyle Zenoni's leftfooted bender from 15 yards ricocheted off the far post and out of play. The drama continued into the final minute of the second overtime as both teams narrowly missed chances to win the game. Jallow's header with 44 seconds left was stopped by Southers while UE's Cory Elenio shot wide right to a seemingly open net with 10 seconds left on the clock.
Milwaukee will look to break into the win column on Saturday (Sept. 11) when No. 19 Tulsa comes to town for the 32nd annual Panther Invitational. The first round game with the Golden Hurricane is set for 2 p.m. at Engelmann Field.
