DEKALB, Ill. -
The University of Washington showed why it is the seventh-ranked team in the country Saturday afternoon, handling the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee 30-15, 30-10, 30-21 on the second day of the Comfort Inn and Suites Invitational.
The Huskies (3-0), who won all three of their matches at the tournament in straight sets, were never threatened in any of the three games.
Karen Fruit, on the heels of a 30-kill performance Friday night in a win over Northern Illinois, led the Panthers (2-1) with 12 kills. Freshman Leanne Felsing added seven kills. Jamie Gabrielson and Melissa Lange shared the team lead with seven digs apiece.
Six-foot-five Sanja Tomasevic had 14 kills to lead the Huskies, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament last year. Christal Morrison added 13 kills while Candace Lee led Washington with 12 digs.
UWM struggled with the much taller Huskies at the net. Washington tallied 10 team blocks and forced the Panthers into 25 hitting errors, leading to a .028 attack percentage for the match.
The Panthers, who split their two matches at the tournament, return home next weekend to host the Panther Invitational. Play starts Friday at 4:30 p.m. with the College of Charleston taking on IUPUI before UWM faces St. Louis at 7 p.m. Action at the Klotsche Center continues Saturday with matches at 11, 1:30, 4:30 and 7.
