CHICAGO, ILL. -
Senior Antou Jallow and freshman Martin Castro combined for two of their teams' four second half goals as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee defeated Loyola University, 5-0, in Horizon League men's soccer action here Sunday (Oct. 24). The Panthers improve to 7-4-3 on the season and 4-1-0 in Horizon League play while winning their season-best fourth straight game. With the loss, Loyola falls to 2-13-1 overall and 1-5-0 in league action.
"This really was a 19-man effort today," UWM head coach Louis Bennett said. "We played every guy on the trip and we got some great efforts by a bunch of different guys. Once we got things sorted out in the second half we played well. This is a very tough place to play so this is a nice win."
The two teams began the game with some back-and-forth play. UWM, playing a young lineup, looked to sort things out while the host Ramblers played tough. Milwaukee eventually dented the scoreboard in the 16th minute when Kyle Zenoni scored his first goal of the season. The junior midfielder collected a loose ball from 20 yards away and rocketed a shot into the upper left corner of the net. The shot was one of three in the first half for UWM while Loyola registered five shots in the frame.
Milwaukee quickly put things away in the second thanks to four goals in the final 45 minutes. Jallow scored his team-leading eighth goal of the year in the 49th minute when he chipped a 10-yard shot into the net after a Troy Spielmann pass. Jallow struck again in the 73rd minute with a long-range header from a Martin Castro pass. Jallow, who has nine goals on the season, now has 49 on his career, trailing UWM's all-time leading scorer Tony Sanneh by two on the school's all-time career list.
Castro continued his fine play as he gave UWM a 4-0 lead in the 77th minute with his first career goal. The South Milwaukee native took a Jallow pass and ripped home a shot from the top of the penalty box. Milwaukee finished the scoring at the 86:40 mark when Craig Mallace scored for the third time this season thanks to a Neil Dombrowski free kick.
UWM outshot Loyola 10-9 on the game while registering six corner kicks to LU's two. Eric Mickschl stopped five Loyola shots to record his third shutout of the season, and second in a row.
"Eric Mickschl made one remarkable save today and he played very well," added Bennett. "Antou also continued his wonderful play by scoring two more goals. We've now won four games in a row and it comes at a good time with three more games coming up this week. We need to get back and get prepared for Marquette on Tuesday."
Milwaukee will have little time to rest before beginning a three-game week on Tuesday. UWM will host crosstown rival Marquette on Tuesday (Oct. 26) at 3:00 p.m. at Engelmann Field.
