MILWAUKEE, Wis. -
Sophomore Stacey Faude's goal in the 108th minute propelled the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to victory, 1-0, over Butler University in an exciting Horizon League showdown Sunday afternoon at Engelmann Field. The Panther defense combined with senior goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin to allow just one shot on goal and preserve a school record-tying fourth straight shutout.
"It's an exciting way to end the game," head coach Michael Moynihan said. "It's also another shutout, which says something about our defense. I never really felt we were threatened."
With the match's second overtime winding down, junior Andrea Kramer started the game-winning play, deflecting an attempted clear by the Bulldog defense near the top of the penalty area. The deflected ball found its way to Faude, who dribbled the ball down the left side of the box before launching a shot from outside the penalty area. Her shot found the top corner of the net, far post, for the game-winner at the 107:41 mark of the game.
"I thought it was a cross," Moynihan added. "I was yelling for (our players) to get in there and the ball tucked into the net. Stacey has been coming up big for us lately with good crosses and plenty of assists. Hopefully she can continue to come up big for us."
Like most of the game, the UWM offense was aggressive in both overtimes controlling possession and outshooting its guests, 4-1, after regulation. For the match, Milwaukee had the 16-7 shot advantage, took the only two corner kicks of the day and forced Butler keeper, Megan Cappa, to make four saves.
St. Aubin and the back line consisting of senior Brenda Andrews, juniors Janice McGann and Rebecca Englund, sophomore Val Cooper and freshman Claire Pignet combined to not allow a serious threat on the Panther goal. The corps allowed just one shot on St. Aubin, who was able to make the save with relative ease.
"It's another shutout which says something about our defense," Moynihan said. "
Milwaukee's fourth-straight shutout ties a school mark set three times before, most recently twice during the 2001 season.
Both halves of regulation faired on the aggressive, but unoffensive, side as the teams combined for 40 of the game's 46 fouls before overtime. The first frame, especially, saw just five shots take, but 18 fouls. Milwaukee held the advantage in both categories, 3-2 and 10-8, respectively.
UWM has now pushed its current unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1) and moved to 8-6-2 on the season and a perfect 6-0 in league play. Butler fell to 3-3 in Horizon League action and 5-8-2 overall.
"It's an exciting way to end the match, though I thought we had plenty of opportunities to end it earlier," Moynihan said. "This means that the league (regular season) championship game will be played on our field (next Sunday versus Detroit). It's good because I think we can draw a good crowd."
The Panthers return to action on Thursday, Oct. 21, against state-rival Wisconsin at Engelmann Field, before Detroit visits to close out the league's regular season on Sunday (Oct. 24). UW has been ranked much of the season, while the Titans are in three points back of Milwaukee in the lague standings with two games to play. Sunday's match will decide the regular season league champion and the top seed for the league tournament. Game times are set for 4 p.m. and noon, respectively.
Notes: Each of Faude's two goals on the season have come as game-winners (UW-Green Bay) ... St. Aubin has tied Liz Ulicki's school record for most consecutive keeper shutouts with four, but is 47 minutes shy of her standard of 447 without allowing a goal ... the 46 combined fouls is a season-high for UWM, topping the 42 called against UW-Green Bay.
