CHICAGO, ILL. -
When a team has a hard time scoring it seems as if every mistake is magnified. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee found this out first hand as the University of Illinois at Chicago took advantage of a UWM miscue to score the game's lone goal in a 1-0 Horizon League victory here Sunday (Oct. 10). The loss snapped Milwaukee's 25-game Horizon League unbeaten streak dating back to Oct. 8, 2000. UWM drops to 3-4-3 and 1-1-0 in the Horizon League while UIC improves to 3-8-1 overall and 2-2-1 in league action.
"As a team we have been putting a lot of pressure on ourselves by missing chances and that has led to breakdowns on the other end," UWM head coach Louis Bennett said. "We just have a huge problem scoring goals right now."
The Panthers, who were playing their sixth consecutive game on the road, outshot UIC on the day 11-9 while registering an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. However, the two teams played to a scoreless first half despite a Kyle Zenone attempt that hit the inside of the post and bounced back out.
Milwaukee controlled play much of the second half but UIC eventually scored following a UWM miscue on defense. After a missed attempt on a UWM corner kick, a UIC defender launched a long ball downfield. A poor attempt to clear the ball setup UIC's Favle Dundjer who notched the game-winner off a breakaway from 20 yards out in the 61st minute.
"It has taken an error on our part for the other team to score and in each of the last two games that has happened and they have scored," Bennett added. "We have six or seven forwards on this team and a lot of them have scored a lot of goals on this level. You can't put too much emphasis on scoring because it can create anxiety but you do have to address the situation. Getting back home should certainly help."
Milwaukee will look to right the ship on Wednesday (Oct. 13) when UW-Green Bay comes to town for a 3:00 p.m. Horizon League contest. UWM will then stay at home and host Wright State at 3:00 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 15). Both matches will take place at Engelmann Field.
