YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -
Senior Melissa Ricter scored two goals and junior Nicole Motl added three assists to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 6-1 rout of Youngstown State University, Friday afternoon in Youngstown. The Panthers' (4-6-2, 2-0 Horizon) six goals is their highest scoring output since an 8-1 victory over Loyola, Nov. 2, 1997.
"We acheived some of the goals we set out to do," head coach Michael Moynihan said. "We moved the ball well and had some nice goals, so it was a good result."
Freshman Pam Shipway got the scoring started, poking a shot past the keeper off a long throw-in from sophomore Taylor Powell in just the fourth minute. The duo hooked up again to cap the game's scoring in the 86th minute. This time it was Powell with the goal off a flick from Shipway.
Junior Elizabeth Chudy scored, what proved to be, the game-winner in the 41st minute, on the first of Motl's three assists. The Middleton native sent a corner kick far post, where Chudy was able to one-time the ball out of the air to make it 2-1.
"The first 20 minutes of the game was pretty sloppy," Moynihan said. "But by the end of the first half, we got the kinks out and controlled the tempo of the game."
For the frame, the Panthers secured a 9-4 shot advantage. UWM also forced four corner kicks and headed into the intermission leading, 2-0.
Just three minutes after the break, Ricter made it 3-0, converting a Motl cross from six yards out. In the 64th minute, Ricter headed in a Motl corner kick for her second straight goal, and Motl's third straight assist.
Milwaukee went up 5-0 on freshman Elizabeth McNally's first collegiate goal in the 67th minute. Freshman Amanda Winn made her season debut and flicked her first collegiate touch past the Penguin defense to McNally, who converted the goal. Just 26 seconds later, YSU avoided the shutout when Sadie Brookman tallied an unassisted score.
"It was a solid team performance," Moynihan said. "Everyone got a lot of minutes and got the job done."
Led by Chudy's six shots, the Panthers outshot Youngstown State, 19-7, for the match and took all five of the match's corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin made three saves for the win, while Mia Railing had six stops in goal for YSU.
Milwaukee continues its road swing at Cleveland State on Sunday. UWM is looking to start the league season 3-0 for the sixth straight year when the two teams kick off at noon.
Notes: Winn made her collegiate debut after missing all of last season and the first 11 games of 2004 with a torn ACL ... Motl's three assists is the most for a UWM player, since Ginny Graczyk tallied three helpers against Wright State, Sept. 28, 2003 ... YSU's goal ended a 336:57 scoreless streak in the series ... Milwaukee has now outscored YSU, 14-1, in the four-game series history ... after tying a school mark with a seven-game winless streak (0-6-1), the Panthers are unbeaten in four straight (3-0-1).
