CHICAGO, ILL. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker in the semifinals of the 2003 Horizon League Tournament, falling 1-0 to Detroit in double overtime. The win snaps UWM's six-game league tournament winning streak which dates back to the 2001 season. With the loss, Milwaukee ends the season at 9-9-1 while Detroit moves on to Sunday's league title game with a similar 9-9-1 record.

Milwaukee controlled the game statistically, registering eight shots on goal to Detroit's five. The Panthers also registered seven corner kicks on the night but failed to connect on numerous scoring chances. UWM's best chance came in the first half when Erin Shaughnessy headed a Ginny Gracyzk corner kick just wide of the wide open net.

The UWM defense held the Titans without many scoring chances but the tourney's No. 5 seed was able to capitalize in the game's 105th minute. Mandi Jaski took a free kick just wide of the penalty box where she delivered a ball to the far post. Allison Epple then headed the ball towards the goal where it slid just under the arms of UWM keeper Molly Schneider for the game-winner.

"It was a tough play," Panther head coach Michael Moynihan said. "The game was pretty balanced throughout and Detroit found a way to get one in."

The loss snaps Milwaukee's NCAA Tournament run at two consecutive seasons. The match signaled the final match for UWM seniors Jeney Walter, Erin Shaughnessy, Sommer Rouse, Alexa Torres, Lisa Bengtsson, Evann Franklin, and Jamie Goller. The Panthers will return eight starters to next year's squad including all-league performers Ginny Graczyk, Elizabeth Chudy, and Brenda Andrews.

"I'm proud of what our athletes accomplished this year," Moynihan added. "You obviously look to win a championship every year, but we'll have to let this game go and get ready for next year."
