DAYTON, OHIO -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team remained unbeaten in Horizon League play thanks to a workmanlike 2-1 victory over Wright State University here Friday (Oct. 10). Freshman Dale Weiler scored the game-winner for the Panthers in a very physical game that was marred by 49 total fouls and nine yellow cards. With the win, UWM improves to 9-4-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the league while Wright State, 7-4-0 overall, fell out of first place and now has a 2-1-0 mark in league play.
Milwaukee scored the only goal of the first half and, as a result, took a 1-0 lead into intermission. The Panthers, who outshot Wright State nine to six in the frame, went ahead at the 28:09 mark thanks to Hermann Trophy candidate Antou Jallow. The junior from Uppsula, Sweden, scored his fifth goal of the season when he headed home a rebound from a deflected Kyle Lance shot.
The home-standing Raiders quickly tied things up in early in the second half when they took advantage of a UWM miscue. Jonah Baskin tapped a free kick to Paul-Anthony Perez who sent it towards goal. The ball then rolled between the legs of Milwaukee keeper Kirk Thode and into the net for the equalizer.
However, the game wasn't tied for long as the quick-striking Panthers notched the game winner less than three minutes later. UWM head coach Louis Bennett mixed things up to start the second half and started freshman Dale Weiler and junior Cliff Ellsworth to begin the stanza. Bennett's hunch paid huge dividends at the 51:17 mark when the forward duo combined on the eventual game-winner. Ellsworth made an aggressive run down the right side where he sent a long crossing pass across the goal mouth. The pass found the 6-3 Weiler who rose above the WSU defense to head home the game-winner. The score was the second of the season for the freshman, with both goals serving as game-clinchers.
"Anytime you can go on the road against a good team and get a win it's huge," Bennett said. "Wright State plays very well and very direct. But, we are really growing as a team and this win proves that. We only have half the job done this weekend. Now we get to enjoy the victory for the rest of the night before we prepare for a good Butler team."
Milwaukee will stay on the road and play the aforementioned Butler Bulldogs in a Horizon League contest on Sunday (Oct. 12). The game is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. at Varsity Field in Indianapolis, Ind.
