KALAMAZOO, Mich. -
Sophomore Karen Fruit pounded out 20 kills and UWM hit a season-high .315 in rolling to a 30-27, 30-27, 30-10 win over Syracuse Saturday afternoon in the Radisson Invitational at University Arena.
Fruit added 16 digs and hit .436 in recording her second double-double of the weekend for the Panthers (3-9). Junior Sarah Potts collected 18 kills and 15 digs, while junior Larissa Cattanach had 11 kills and four blocks and junior Lindsey Spoden added 45 assists.
Syracuse (9-4) hit just .092 for the match. Kristen Conway led the Orangewomen with 12 kills.
The 10 points allowed by the Panthers in the third game are the fewest UWM has ever allowed in a single game under the new scoring format, introduced prior to the 2001 season. The Orangewomen hit -.121 in the game, while the Panthers hit .432.
"Certainly it's a nice win," UWM head coach Kathy Litzau said. "We played better as the match went along. Sarah played great defense and was really our go-to hitter down the stretch."
Freshman Melissa Lange played the best all-around match of her young career, tallying five kills, six assists and seven digs. Senior libero Kristen Krubsack collected 10 digs.
The Panthers return to action Tuesday night, finally opening the home schedule with a 7 p.m. match against Chicago State at the Klotsche Center. UWM then opens league play at Wright State and Butler next weekend.
