UWM Volleyball Rolls Past Butler

Sept. 29, 2001

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - Laura Dallenbach recorded 15 kills to lead a balanced UWM attack in a 30-17, 30-16, 30-24 win over Butler Saturday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.

Julie Yankus and Carly Allison added 12 kills apiece for the Panthers (7-5, 3-1 Horizon League), who won for the 49th time in their last 51 home matches. The win is also the third straight for UWM and the 150th of head coach Kathy Litzau's career.

UWM dominated in every phase of the match, outhitting the Bulldogs (6-4, 2-2) .315 to .121, collecting 62 digs to Butler's 45 and recording 10 service aces to just one for the Bulldogs.

The Panthers never trailed in any of the three games and there was only one tie in the entire match.

"It was a solid performance. I'm very happy," Litzau said. "In game one Butler didn't play very well but in game two, we just closed the door. They played well and hit .263, but we hit .571 and dominated them."

Keely Norris led Butler with 11 kills. No other Bulldog had more than six. Butler dropped its second-straight match on the weekend after falling at UW-Green Bay in four games Friday night.

In game one, UWM scored five straight points to break a 1-1 tie. After Butler closed back to within 13-12, UWM scored nine straight points to take control of the game.

In game two, the Panthers again built a 6-1 lead. Butler got back to within two points, but an 18-7 Panther run put the game away.

Game three was tighter, but the Panthers remained in control throughout. After UWM built an early seven-point advantage, Butler closed to within three points on six separate occasions but could never get any closer.

UWM's advantage on the serve was a big key in the win.

"It used to be in 15-point rally scoring in the fifth game, everyone would back off on the serve," Litzau said. "But I really think in this format all the time you need to step up, because you want to make a serve that keeps the other team from scoring a point."

UWM returns to the road for its next action, playing at Youngstown St. Friday night and at Cleveland St. Saturday afternoon.
