MILWAUKEE -
Laura Dallenbach collected 16 kills and Lindsey Spoden finished two kills shy of a triple-double as UWM claimed a 30-28, 30-23, 31-33, 30-25 win over Wright St. Friday night at the Klotsche Center.
Dallenbach added 22 digs, while Spoden tallied eight kills, 13 digs and 52 assists. Tari Boutin contributed 13 kills and Carly Allison pitched-in with a career-high 10 kills as UWM (6-5, 2-1 Horizon League) won for the 48th time in its last 50 home matches.
Chrissy Schurla and Julie Yankus also added eight kills apiece for the Panthers, who hit .242 to just .143 for Wright St. Tricia Naseman, Lisa Osterhage and Karis Day tallied 15 kills apiece for the Raiders (10-2, 2-1), who saw their seven-match winning streak end.
"It's a nice win," UWM head coach Kathy Litzau said. "I told the team I felt we fought tonight. Even in game three when we lost the game, I didn't feel we ever stopped fighting. That fight has been missing in a lot of matches this season, and I was glad to see the fight back tonight."
UWM's fight was apparent in game four, as the Panthers overcame early deficits of 5-0 and 9-3 to claim the win. The Panthers scored seven straight points to grab a 10-9 advantage, and after Wright St. tied the game at 10, UWM scored the next three points and never trailed again.
The Panthers gained control of the match by winning games one and two. In game one there were eight ties, and UWM broke the final one by scoring the last two points of the game as Boutin and Schurla collected kills. In game two, UWM fought back from a 14-11 deficit. The Panthers took the lead for good at 16-15 on a Wright St. ball-handling error, then outscored the Raiders 14-8 the rest of the way.
UWM had to fight from behind throughout game three before falling. The Panthers trailed by as many as four points, but forced ties at 24, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31 before dropping the game.
UWM's bench again played a key role in the victory, with 11 players seeing action. Laina Bailey made her first appearance of the season, contributing two service aces and a kill, helping to spark the Panther offense.
"Laina did a great job," Litzau said. "The two aces and the rest of her serves really took Wright St. out of its offense."
The Panthers continue their three-game homestand by welcoming Butler to the Klotsche Center Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs entered their matchup at UW-Green Bay Friday night with a perfect 2-0 league mark.
