BOWLING GREEN, OHIO-The UWM men's soccer team (6-2) was defeated, 1-0, in double overtime by host Bowling Green (2-1-1) Sunday evening. The Panthers split the weekend tournament after beating Dayton, 3-2, on Saturday.
Forward Detrick Matthews scored for Bowling Green in the 111th minute, slipping behind the UWM defense to head in the game winner.
"It's disappointing not being able to take care of details and not being able to finish chances," UWM coach Louis Bennett said. "We squandered the same amount of chances today as we did yesterday, except that we didn't put any in at all."
Milwaukee outshot the Falcons, 20-11. Similar to Saturday's game, the Panthers couldn't capitalize on a few good 1v1 opportunities at goal. UWM also missed its chance to convert on a penalty kick in the second half, as Bowling Green goalkeeper David DeGraff came up with the save. DeGraff finished the shutout with seven saves on the match.
"It's hard to maintain focus when we have a lot of the possession and a lot of chances, but don't finish," Bennett said. "This is a good, maturing game that will add to experience. But this loss, as well as our other loss on the season, was definitely avoidable."
Freshman midfielder Antou Jallow, sophomore midfielder Tighe Dombrowski and junior defenders Evan Richardson and Chad Dombrowski were named to the all-tournament team for UWM. Bowling Green won its own tournament with a 1-0-1 record on the weekend after tieing Canisius, 0-0, in double overtime on Saturday.
After playing back-to-back games two straight weekends on the road, UWM won't compete until Sunday, Sept. 30, when they host Detroit to open their league schedule.
