MILWAUKEE-- Sophomore Melissa Tancredi and freshman Reagan Jones scored a pair of goals to lead Notre Dame past UWM,
2-0, in an exhibition match Tuesday at Engelmann Field.
The Panthers opened their season against the Irish, who are ranked No. 4 in the preseason NSCAA poll.
"It's a good place to start the season," said UWM coach Michael Moynihan. "We want to get better, and to play one of the best
teams in the country is a great opportunity for us."
The first half contained mostly shared possession in the midfield until an injury to UWM's Katie Kubacki delayed the game for 20
minutes. Kubacki received a concussion to the back of the head following a collision with a Notre Dame player, and had to be taken
off the field by an ambulance. Play resumed with Notre Dame stealing the momentum and Tancredi scoring at the 33:27 mark off a
through ball sent into the box.
The Irish scored its second goal in the 64th minute when Jones tucked away a loose ball in the Panthers' goal box from 15 yards
out.
"I'm very happy with the intensity our team showed," Moynihan said. "It was a bit of a blow for us when we lost a player like Katie
Kubacki. The game was even at that point and we were creating a lot of chances to score. We just hope she's okay."
Notre Dame outshot UWM, 25-8, while Panthers' goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin recorded 12 saves. Junior Mary Duffy subbed in for
St. Aubin late in the second half and recorded four saves, and Irish goalkeeper Elizabeth Wagner tallied two saves on the game.
