FAIRBORN, Ohio -
UWM rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning and three Panther pitchers combined to shut out Wright State over the final three innings as UWM claimed a 10-8 win over the second-place Raiders Friday night.
The win gives the Panthers (27-14, 11-2 MCC) a three-game lead over Wright State (26-22, 8-5 MCC) in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.
The Panthers trailed 8-7 following a two-run home run from Lance Links in the bottom of the sixth inning. But, UWM rallied to take the lead in the seventh. Dave Pudlosky reached on a single with one out, then went to third on a Steve Guden single. Pudlosky scored when Guden stole second and the throw went into center field. Guden, who had taken third on the error, then scored on a wild pitch.
UWM then added an insurance run on a Guden single with two outs in the top of the ninth.
Quintin Oldenburg (8-2) went the first seven innings for the Panthers, settling down through the middle innings after allowing five runs in the first two innings. Oldenburg's eighth win ties a school record. Matt Freisleben pitched the eighth inning, and Jason Crawford came on with one out in the ninth, recording the final two outs for his third save.
The Panthers bounced back from an early 2-0 deficit with four runs in the second inning, capped by a three-run homer to left by Matt Houk. UWM then built a 7-5 advantage with three runs on four doubles in the fourth inning.
The series continues Saturday when the two teams play a doubleheader. Game one begins at 11 a.m. CDT.
