Aaron Bushong pitched a six-hit shutout and UWM scored in every inning but the third as the Panthers beat Detroit, 16-0, in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Tournament opener for both teams.

Bushong allowed only one runner as far as third base in pitching his second career complete game and first career shutout. He walked just one batter while striking out six.

The Panther offense struck throughout the game. UWM scored three times in the first inning, two runs coming in on an errant pick-off throw to first base. The Panthers also took advantage of an error to score a run in the second, and Scott Gillitzer drove in two runs with a single in the fourth. UWM added a run in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by John VandenBerg and Steve Guden, then scored two more times in the sixth on an RBI single by Eric Goerdt and a sacrifice fly by Guden.

UWM then used the long ball to cap the scoring, as Goerdt cracked a grand slam in the seventh and Matt Houk hit a two-run homer in the eighth.

The Panthers, second in the nation in hitting, had 18 hits as Houk, Gillitzer and Goerdt had three hits apiece. Darin Haugom had two doubles, making him UWM's all-time doubles leader with 44.

UWM (36-16), the top seed in the tournament, will play Wright State at 3 p.m. on Friday. Wright State was beaten by Butler, 6-5, Thursday night. In Thursday's other first round game, UIC scored a 1-0 win over Cleveland State.
