MILWAUKEE - Jason Frederick scored 19 points as UWM defeated intrastate rival UW-Parkside 91-58 Saturday night at the Klotsche Center.
The Panthers (5-5) started the second half with a 27-4 run to build a 70-35 lead over the Rangers, who came into the game 9-1 and ranked 16th in NCAA Division II.
UWM, which hosts Wisconsin Thursday, did not overlook its neighbors to the south. After trailing 17-13 eight minutes into the game, the Panthers controlled the contest.
"We did not take these guys lightly and we did not look ahead," UWM head coach Bruce Pearl, who improved to 14-0 as a head coach against the Rangers, said. "You have to give our kids credit because they really did play well."
"From start to finish the game was controlled by the Panthers," UWP head coach Jeff Rutter said. "We walked into a lion's den tonight. I'm sure we were a little tight. Things just kind of snowballed from there."
UWM's physical presence helped the Panthers dominate the contest. The Panthers outrebounded Parkside, 40-24, and UWM held a 31-12 edge at the free throw line.
Clay Tucker, Ronnie Jones and Kalombo Kadima scored 14 points each for Milwaukee. Quincey Moman led Parkside with 12 points.
Meanwhile, Frederick converted on 6-of-10 shots from the field after making just two of his last 23 field goal attempts.
"I just wanted to come in and forget about what happened in the past," Frederick said. "I wanted to get my confidence back. I hit a shot early and it got me going."
UWM used a 10-0 first-half run to turn a 17-13 deficit into a 23-17 advantage, and UWM did not trail the rest of the way. UWM led by 12 at halftime before claiming complete control of the contest with its early second-half run. The Panthers led by as many as 36 points in the second half.
UWM returns to action Thursday night, hosting in-state rival Wisconsin. The game is sold out but can be seen locally on WMLW-TV 41 in Milwaukee.
