MILWAUKEE-The UWM women's soccer team outshot Youngstown State, 35-1, en route to a 5-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Engelmann Field. The Panthers (8-2, 3-0 Horizon) claim their eighth-straight win while shutting out their third league opponent on the season.
"We maintained a high intensity the entire game," UWM coach Michael Moynihan said. "What I like is the fact that everyone played again. No matter who was in the game for us, we had a high work rate. That's a credit to our leadership, as they keep the focus and intensity day in and day out."
Amy Oechsner led UWM in scoring with two goals and one assist. The junior forward scored the game's first goal in the 8th minute, finishing a cross from midfielder Katie Kubacki. Oechsner then helped assist Erin Blaedow for UWM's second goal that came off a cross from Rana Thompson.
With UWM leading 3-0 after Maggie Suminksi converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute, Oechsner scored her second goal when she finished on a breakaway from 15 yards out. Sophomore Alexa Torres sent in the ball over the YSU defense to lead Oechsner with the one-on-one in the 73rd minute.
Sophomore forward Lisa Bengtsson scored in the 83rd minute off an assist from junior Sommer Rouse to end UWM's scoring at 5-0.
The Panthers recorded 19 shots on goal, allowing Penguins goalkeeper Christine Handte to tally 14 saves. Goalkeepers Kerri St. Aubin and Mary Duffy split time in front of the net for the third straight game and seventh overall this season.
"We've got two tough games coming up this week," Moynihan said of the Panthers' schedule that includes Wisconsin and Northwestern. "It would have been easy for our team to look beyond these two past games and ahead to the next couple, but we didn't. We allowed two shots against us this weekend, which shows our focus and consistency."
The Panthers take on the Badgers in Madison on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., and then host the Wildcats on Sunday at 1 p.m. Heading into Wednesday's match, UWM will be attempting to tie its season record of nine-consecutive wins set during the 1994 season.
