The UWM women's volleyball team recovered from a 2-0 deficit to record a heart-stopping 29-31, 19-30, 30-22, 32-30, 17-15 win over Loyola Friday night at the
Klotsche Center.
The win moves the Panthers (11-5, 7-1 Horizon) into a first-place tie with the
Ramblers (11-7, 7-1) in the Horizon League.
Chrissy Schurla led UWM with 21 kills and 20 digs while hitting .487 for the
match. Laura Dallenbach added 17 kills and 21 digs for the Panthers. Lauren
Mikos led Loyola with 23 kills and 26 digs.
"We really turned it on in game three," head coach Kathy Litzau said.
"Early on, we were scrambling and they served us off the court. But, those are the
ones you want to win. We had the crowd into it - they were on their feet with
every play - and we pulled it out."
UWM trailed early in the deciding fifth game, but the game was then tied at 9,
10, 11, 12, 14 and 15. UWM then claimed the win on two Rambler attack errors.
The Panther comeback started in game three, as UWM broke free from a 19-all tie with four-straight points. Loyola did pull within 23-21, but the Panthers scored seven of the final eight points in the game to claim the win.
Game four was again tight with 15 more ties. UWM let game-point opportunities at 29-28 and 30-29 slip away, but the Panthers closed out the game on a pair of kills from Schurla.
"Chrissy just really wanted to win tonight," Litzau said. "She played tough offensively, she played tough defensively. She really did it all tonight."
The first game of the match was extremely tight and included 19 ties. But, Loyola scored the final two points on two Panther attack errors to gain the early advantage. The Ramblers then cruised through game two, limiting UWM to a -.023 hitting percentage and putting the Panthers in a big hole.
The Panthers return to action Saturday afternoon, welcoming UIC to the Klotsche
Center for a 4 p.m. match.
