MILWAUKEE-Northwestern ended UWM's nine-game winning streak after the Panthers (9-3, 3-0 Horizon) lost, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Engelmann Field.
"When we were composed in the midfield, we caused a lot of problems for them," UWM coach Michael Moynihan said. "When we didn't do that, we made them dangerous because they play very direct on the counterattack. Although their record doesn't show it, they're a good team."
Scoreless at the half, the Wildcats finally broke the silence in the 61st minute when Katie Hertz headed in a corner kick. Milwaukee roared back less than three minutes later when Lisa Bengtsson scored the equalizer. Rana Thompson's corner kick was cleared by Northwestern, but Bengtsson's rebound shot from eight yards out was deflected in to tie the game.
Northwestern scored the game-winner after Hertz sent in a long ball over the UWM defense. Ashleigh Garmon beat UWM goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin to the open ball and finished to the open net in the 73rd minute. The Wildcats finished with the 9-7 advantage on shots, while both teams recorded five on goal.
"What I like today is that we got down a goal but fought back right away to score," Moynihan said. "We hadn't lost a game in a long time, so we'll see how we rebound. Knowing the team's maturity, I know we'll be fine."
The loss ends Milwaukee's nine-game winning streak, which tied the school record for most consecutive wins in a season. That record was previously set during the 1994 campaign.
"This team has already put its name in the record books," Moynihan said. "That streak is over, but we still have more to do, and we'll get it done."
UWM hits the road with a pair of league games next weekend, traveling to Detroit for Friday's game at 1 p.m. and to Butler for Sunday's game at noon.
