SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Jason Frederick scored 21 points to lead four Panthers in double figures as UWM recorded an 81-77 victory at the University of San Diego Tuesday night.

The Panthers, who led by as many as nine in the second half, saw their lead trimmed to 3 at 73-70 with 1:00 to play. But, on UWM's next possession and with the shot clock winding down, Mike Sowder buried a three-point shot from the left wing to give the Panthers a six-point advantage. The Toreros failed to score on their next possession, and Dan Weisse hit two free throws to seal the victory.

UWM built a 71-62 advantage with 3:58 to play following seven straight points by Chad Angeli. Those points capped a 12-2 Panther run, helping UWM overcome San Diego's second lead of the second half.

The Panther bench played a key role in the first half, scoring 32 of UWM's 39 points. Jason Frederick scored 16 in the first half, while Ronnie Jones contributed 11 in the first 20 minutes.

For the game, Angeli added 16 points, Jones contributed 15 and Sowder pitched in with 12.

San Diego built an early five-point advantage, but UWM ran off 14 of the next 16 points to grab a 22-15 lead with 9:53 left in the half. The Toreros did fight back to regain a 31-29 advantage, but the Panthers carried a 39-35 lead into the locker room.

UWM returns to action Saturday night, opening MCC play at in-state rival UW-Green Bay. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m., and the game can be seen in Milwaukee on TV-41.
