MILWAUKEE - After coming up empty in their last couple of dominating performances, the UWM women's soccer team resurfaced with an impressive 3-2 overtime victory against Central Michigan Friday night in the opening round of the Central Michigan Invitational.
With a 2-2 score at the end of regulation, the Panthers finished the Chippewas in the third minute of overtime as a result of a CMU own-goal. The winning goal was credited to junior midfielder Erin Blaedow, who sent in a nice serve behind the defense that went off a defender's head into the goal. Senior Lindsey Munkwitz initially made a slashing run to challenge for the serve, prompting CMU to try to defend.
"If Lindsey hadn't challenged like she did, it would have been an easy clear from the defense," said UWM coach Michael Moynihan. "But she made a great effort to get in there. She's been playing really well the past few games, beating people one on one and getting great serves off. She's been really consistent for us."
Munkwitz set up UWM's first goal in the 23rd minute of the first half. Receiving the ball on the left wing, she beat two people to serve it into the back of CMU's defense. Freshman forward Lisa Bengtsson got the ball wide and dribbled it in from the end line, tucking a shot past the goalkeeper to take the lead, 1-0.
CMU routed back in the 33rd minute of the half with a goal scored from inside the box, finishing off the first-half scoring with one goal a piece.
The Panthers came out in the second half with a goal from sophomore Kristin Munyon. Munyon's goal was the result of a through ball from midfielder Julie Ruma, who sent it over the top to lead the defender-turned-forward with a breakaway against the goalkeeper.
"Kristin was dangerous and she held the ball very well for us," said Moynihan. "She looks to get to the goal, which is awesome to see. She's a great physical presence up top, and that compliments Lisa and Amy (Oechsner) well."
The Chippewas tied the game, 2-2, minutes later with a soft goal from forward Allison Campbell. The game nearly ended with a UWM goal late in regulation, but a brilliant combination play between Munyon and Bengtsson was ruled offsides. The call fueled the fire for the Panthers, as they quickly reached the back of the net early in overtime to end the game, 3-2, and snap a two-game losing steak.
"It's nice to get the win after we've been playing so well the last few games and haven't gotten the results we've wanted," said Moynihan.
