UWM Lose To BYU At Home

Box Score

Sept. 23, 2000

MILWAUKEE-Outshot by a 21-4 margin, the UWM women's soccer team succumbed to the relentless attack of BYU by a score of 2-0 Saturday at Engelmann Field. The Panthers fall to 4-5-1 on the season, while nationally-ranked No. 24 BYU climbs to 7-2.

"They're very good. They've outshot everybody that they've played this year by a significant margin. Today, they were definitely the better team and deserved the win," said UWM coach Michael Moynihan.

After a scoreless first half, BYU got on the board with a goal in the 61st minute. Midfielder Sarah Higham received the ball from a throw-in and slid it through to an open teammate on the far post. Forward Kim Lowe placed it past UWM goalkeeper Mary Duffy to take the 1-0 lead.

The Cougars added an insurance goal at the 81:44 mark when senior Michelle Jensen-Peterson scored on a break-away from near-midfield to finish the game, 2-0.

"They broke us down individually. We didn't match the physicalness, the intensity in individual battles, and we were also too timid going forward," said Moynihan. "But it's great to play teams like this, they show you what you need to work on. Experiencing this level of competition will help us down the road."
