CHICAGO - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball team defeated UW-Green Bay, 62-58, in the quarterfinals of the MCC Tournament on Saturday, earning its second-ever MCC tourney win while advancing to Sunday's first semifinal game scheduled to tip off at 1:05 p.m. CST. The Panthers will face Butler after the Bulldogs defeated Loyola in the quarterfinals Saturday, 61-57.
Surprising everyone was the return of freshman Clay Tucker who had suffered what was thought to be a season-ending broken wrist during the final minutes of the Chicago State game on Feb. 15. Tucker rejoined the starting five and even wearing a brace on his wrist, he made a significant contribution to the overall game. Although Tucker was not able to regain his shooting prowess, going 0-for-8 from the field and 0-for-5 from three-point, he had five rebounds, a pair of assists, three steals a block, and scored six points -- all from the free-throw line.
"He was a great decoy," said head coach Bo Ryan about Tucker's return. "He wasn't supposed to shoot eight shots. He wasn't' supposed to shoot at all. But there are so many other things he does fort his team that him being out there for us was important."
Junior Chad Angeli led the Panthers with 17 points, going 6-for-9 from the field and 5-for-7 from the charity line. Senior Shaun Fountain added another 14 points.
"We're a team that if one of us goes down the others step up and get it done," said Angeli. "I'm really glad for Shaun (Fountain) that we get to play another game."
