INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - UW-Milwaukee men's basketball player, junior center Chad Angeli, was named to the 1999-2000 All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference First Team the league announced today. Freshman Clay Tucker was named to the All-Newcomer Team.
Angeli leads the Panthers averaging 16.8 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game. He has scored in double digits in all but three games this season. Tucker, before suffering a season-ending injury against Chicago State on Feb. 15, was averaging 14.3 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game. He was leading the team before his injury in rebounding, assists, blocks and steals.
Point guard Rashad Phillips, a senior from the University of Detroit Mercy, was named the MCC Player of the Year. Butler's Barry Collier was honored as the league's Coach of the Year for the second straight season, and senior guard Damon Stringer of Cleveland State was named the conference's Newcomer of the Year. Voting was done by MCC head men's basketball coaches, sports information directors and media.
Phillips led the MCC and finished the regular season ranked fifth in the nation in scoring, averaging 23.1 points per game. He led the league in assists per game (5.17) and three pointers made (92), was third in free-throw percentage (.868) and three-point percentage (.413), and fifth in steals per game (1.55). Phillips scored 25 or more points in a game 14 times this season, including topping 30 four times. A candidate for the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award given annually to the nation's top senior six feet tall and under, Phillips helped the Titans to a perfect 14-0 home season at Calihan Hall.
Angeli and Phillips are joined on the All-MCC first team by Stringer, and Wright State's Kevin Melson and Israel Sheinfeld.
Collier led the Bulldogs to the regular-season MCC title, posting an overall record of 20-7, 12-2 in league play. Butler has won 20 or more games four straight seasons, advancing to postseason play each of the last three. The Bulldogs enter the 2000 Nokia MCC Men's Basketball Tournament winners of 12 straight games, the fourth-longest current winning streak in the nation. Collier has now been named MCC Coach of the Year four times, including three of the past four seasons.
Stringer, a transfer from Ohio State, guided Cleveland State to a 16-13 overall mark, 9-5 in the MCC for third place. He finished second in the league scoring race, averaging 19.6 ppg. Earlier this season, he fired in 47 points against UW-Milwaukee, the third-highest single game total by a player in the NCAA this year.
Tucker and Stringer are joined on the All-Newcomer team by Maurice Brown of UIC, Terrell Riggs of Detroit, and Mike King of UW-Green Bay.
