MILWAUKEE -
UWM scored 25 of the game's first 27 points en route to a record-setting 100-21 win over Mt. Senario Wednesday night at the Klotsche Center.
The 79-point win established a new record for victory margin, smashing the old mark of 58 points set against Illinois-Chicago in 1965. Also, the last time the Panthers gave up just 21 points was a 28-21 win over Carroll College in 1940.
Mt. Senario, an NAIA Division II school, dressed just five players for the game because of suspensions and team defections. Perry Myren scored 18 of Mt. Senario's 21 points, with the only other basket coming from Greg Issac with just eight seconds remaining.
"I give our guys credit," Panther coach Bo Ryan said after all 13 Panther players dressed for the game scored. "We kept moving the basketball. We took good shots. We didn't try to press. We didn't try to fast break. I thought our guys handled the situation with a lot of class."
Jason Frederick and Kevin Schifferer scored 12 points apiece to pace the Panthers, who led 50-11 at halftime and led by as many as 82 points in the game. No starter played more than 19 minutes, and the Panthers had gone deep into their bench by midway through the first half.
The Panther defense was again strong, limiting the Fighting Saints (1-15) to 19 percent shooting and forcing 29 turnovers.
UWM returns to action Saturday night, hosting Big 12 rival Colorado at the Klotsche Center. Tipoff is set for 7:07 p.m., and the game can be seen in Milwaukee on TV-41.
