MILWAUKEE-Under adverse conditions, the UWM women's soccer team managed to pull together and capture a win against Oakland on Friday afternoon in Rochester, Minnesota. Arriving 10 minutes before game time due to a late bus, the Panthers (9-6-1) overcame a shaky first half and a one-goal deficit to defeat the Grizzlies, 2-1, in overtime.
Junior captain Erin Blaedow scored the winning goal in the second minute of overtime off an assist from freshman forward Lisa Bengtsson. Bengtsson received the ball off a serve down the sideline, and beat her defender to take it to the endline. She cut it back and crossed it low into the box, finding Blaedow to finish it in from six yards out.
Down 1-0 at halftime, the Panthers got back into the game when sophomore Kristin Munyon scored the equalizer in the 75th minute. Munyon scored from close range, running straight onto a ball sent in by senior defender Fanta Cooper. Cooper won the ball in the Panthers' defense and carried it forward to the endline, connecting with Munyon to tie the score, 1-1, in the second half.
UWM was outshot by Oakland in the first half, 7-2, and 10-8 overall. Unable to properly warm-up before the game, the Panthers came-out sluggish and allowed an early Grizzly goal at the 6:59 mark. Using the first half more like an initial warm-up, UWM came out fired-up in the second half and outshot the Grizzlies, 5-3. Freshman goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin recorded six saves in the match.
"I'm pleased with the outcome. Under difficult conditions on the road, we showed the maturity to turn around a slow start and figure out how to get back into the game," said UWM coach Michael Moynihan. "We're looking forward to Sunday's game, a huge match-up against Michigan. They're loaded, so it will be a big test to see how much we've progressed during the season."
