Milwaukee - Behind junior center Chad Angeli's career-high 30 points, the UW-Milwaukee men's basketball team upset defending conference champion Detroit, 64-59, Thursday night. Angeli also set a school record with 18 free throws on 18-21 from the line.
The game was played in front of 2,593 fans, the seventh largest crowd in Klotsche Center history. The Panthers move to 10-8 on the season, 3-3 in conference play, and Detroit fell to 13-7, 4-2 in the MCC.
"This was a step," said Angeli. "I'm so proud of everyone. We have the potential if we learn from our mistakes."
Early in the game, Rashad Phillips, the MCC's leading scorer, paced the Titan attack with 15 points in the first half. Detroit pushed its lead in the first half to as many as 11 and took a 34-29 lead into the break.
In the second half, UW-Milwaukee stormed back on Angeli's shoulders as he scored 18 points in the half, including 14 free throws. The Panthers defense also stepped up as they limited Phillips to five points in the half, keeping him four below his conference-best average.
"I'm proud of our guys," said Panther head coach Bo Ryan. "They came out in the second half and got things done. Everyone wanted to be where we are back when we started conditioning in September. That's why we're here. Nothing is a surprise because it's expected."
The second half saw seven ties and seven lead changes until the Panthers took the lead for good, 58-56, with two minutes remaining.
Clay Tucker also scored in double figures for the Panthers with 12. Shaun Fountain had a team-high seven rebounds and added eight points in the win.
UW-Milwaukee plays host to Cleveland State on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 7:00 p.m. The Panthers take on instate rival UW-Green Bay on Feb. 5 at the Klotsche Center. The Phoenix topped UW-Milwaukee, 67-65, earlier this season on Jan. 8.
