Box Score

Oct. 8, 1999

Detroit - Tammy Sobaski's (Cottage Grove, Minn.-Cottage Grove) two goals, including the game winner in overtime, carried the UWM women's soccer team past Detroit, 2-1, on Friday. The win moves the Panthers to 8-5-1 on the season, 3-0 in conference.

"She does very well in these types of matches," said UWM head coach Michael Moynihan. "It was a small field where she worked hard and earned both of her goals."

UWM battled through the sloppy, wet conditions to take the early lead on Sobaski's first goal. It came in the 28th minute off a rebound from Katie Waltenberger (Racine, Wis.-Horlick).

Waltenberger later had a goal disallowed in the 77th minute after a late call by the referee. Detroit capitalized and mounted their own attack, scoring just five minutes later to force overtime.

UWM dominated the overtime session having several breakaway chances. Julie Ruma (Omaha, Neb.-Marian) crossed a ball into the box where Sobaski headed in the game winner.

"Mike (Moynihan) said that we weren't leaving here without a 'W'," said Sobaski. "We all believed him and never gave up dispite the conditions."

The Panthers take on Butler on Sunday in Indianapolis in their fourth conference game of the season.
