Marion’s Two-Homer Day Spoiled in Series Finale

DAYTON, Ohio – Charlie Marion hit a pair of home runs including a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the ninth, but Wright State scored twice in the bottom half to complete the weekend sweep with a 6-5 victory.

The Panthers trailed 4-2 heading into the ninth inning. Bradyn Horn drew a two-out walk, and Max Glusick followed with another free pass ahead of Marion's three-run blast.

The first two batters reached in the bottom half of the inning for the Raiders before a walk loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly tied the game at five, and another walk reloaded the bases. The final batter of the game then drew a walk to force home the game-winning run.

"I was always told by my mentor, and longtime head coach, Scott Doffek, that you win when you ready to win," said head coach Shaun Wegner.  Today was a great example of not being able to truly earn the victory. It came down late to poor communication on a bunt play and then it spiraled into free bases and ultimately the walk-off walk."

Wright State had 11 hits and drew five walks, Keegan Holmstrom and Patrick Fultz each had two hits and a walk, while Hunter Warren, Andrew Duncan, and Braylen Blomquist also recorded multi-hit efforts.

Matthew Mueller started for Milwaukee and threw 1 2/3 hitless innings to begin the game.  Riley Peterson followed with 3 2/3 innings, while Lucas Watson and Tyler Andrews combined for two scoreless frames. Camden Kuhnke recorded the final two outs in the eighth before getting two outs in the ninth and suffering the loss.

"Like yesterday, our bullpen came in a did what they needed to do to limit damage and keep us within striking distance," added Wegner. "Peterson filled the role quite well coming on in relief of Mueller. Watson was outstanding, Andrews threw well, and Kuhnke got us out of that jam in the eighth. Unfortunately, we just couldn't get the game to extra innings."

Chet Law got the start for the Raiders and allowed five hits over 6 1/3 innings. Malachi Paplanus did not allow a hit over 2 1/3 innings, while Michael Zielinski earned the win as he retired the final batter in the ninth.

"We were stagnant offensively until late when we got into the bullpen against some of their leveraged arms," said Wegner. "After yesterday's game, I stated that the offense was going to need to manufacture and score some runs, and we didn't do a great job of that against Lax. Credit to Marion, who really got some swings off, and could have had three home runs, if not for hitting it straight into the conditions in right. I'm looking for this game to be the boost he needs."

"We get a little time to get back to practice and be intentional with our training as we look ahead to our home-opening series against Butler," Wegner concluded.

Milwaukee is slated begin its home schedule on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., when the Panthers host Butler at Franklin Field.
