WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – In the team's tune-up heading into Horizon League play this weekend at Northern Kentucky, the Milwaukee baseball team paid a visit to Purdue on Tuesday afternoon.
 Â
The Panthers took a first-inning lead with a sacrifice fly by
Dominic Kibler, bringing home
Grant Ross, who had walked on five pitches to open the game. Milwaukee was unable to push another run across for the remainder of the contest.
"We talk about limiting big innings as well as shut down innings and today was the antithesis of those concepts," said head coach
Shaun Wegner. "We got out early with the run in the first and then before we knew what hit us, the scoreboard was lopsided the other way."
Â
Tristan Arnold got the start for the Panthers and pitched into the second inning.
Alex Vander Loop struck out two Boilermakers in his 1 1/3 innings.
Tyler Andrews faced the minimum over his 1 1/3 innings, while
Aiden Fishnick,
Camden Kuhnke, and
Lucas Watson all registered strikeouts in relief.
Â
"Give credit to Purdue, they swung the bats and took advantage of mistakes, but we can't expect to pitch the baseball like that and beat anyone," Wegner added. "I wanted to see more fight and scrap out of the lineup when the score flipped but we just couldn't find the gritty nature we want in the box."
Eight pitchers took the mound for the Boilermakers, with Austin Klug earning the win in relief after tossing 2 2/3 innings without allowing a run. Jacob Boland also had a strong outing, throwing two scoreless innings with a team-best three strikeouts.
Â
Jackson Bessette led Purdue's offense with three RBIs, while Ali Banks, Sam Flores, and CJ Richmond all had multi-RBI games in the 17-1 win.
Â
Milwaukee will begin Horizon League play Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. when the team visits the Bill Aker Baseball Complex to take on Northern Kentucky.
