DeKALB, Ill. – The Milwaukee women's tennis team wrapped up a busy week of three matches with a tough matchup at Northern Illinois Sunday afternoon, falling by a final score of 6-1 at the Nelson Tennis Center.
The Panthers (1-4) came out on top in one of the doubles matches to start the day, but the Huskies (8-2) played well the rest of the way, winning for the eighth time in their last nine outings.
Nel Van Hout picked up the MKE point, extending her winning streak in singles play to five consecutive as well as to 11-1 overall on the season with a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Theodora Kousiou at No. 2.
"Northern Illinois competed at a high level today and earned the result," head coach
Mark Goldin said. "We are still a bit shorthanded due to injuries, but I was proud of how our group stepped in and battled. Nel's win in singles was a bright spot, and there were stretches where we showed real fight. We're looking forward to a big week of practice as we get ready for local rival Marquette."
Nadiia Konieva and
Sara Simonova evened doubles play at 1-1 with a 6-2 victory at No. 2, but the Huskies picked up the doubles point with wins at one and three.
Emilia Durska went back-and-forth at No. 3 before falling in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Up next, the Panthers travel across town to battle Marquette Friday, set to get underway at 5 p.m.
