FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Amar Augillard scored a career-high 35 points but strong shooting from three-point range helped Purdue Fort Wayne extends its home-court winning streak Sunday afternoon from the Gates Sports Center.
The Panthers (8-12, 4-5 Horizon League) kept the game within reach against the Mastodons (12-8, 6-3 Horizon League) until down the stretch. Purdue Fort Wayne connected on 56 percent from the field overall and sank 13 three's to spark its offense in the victory.
"We can make excuses all we want, but for three years Milwaukee has been the 'toughest' team in this league and our guys right now, whether they are young or inexperienced or whatever; different roles ... doesn't matter – we are playing, while other people are competing," head coach
Bart Lundy said. "And it's not going to work … we have zero margin for error and if we don't compete and we don't come up with the ball, and we don't scrap for every stop and every rebound, then we are going to get no results different from tonight."
The decision improves them to 9-1 at home this season and also extends their winning streak at Gates Sports Center – the team's on-campus court – to 16 consecutive dating back to the 2022-23 campaign.
"It's the same story," Lundy said. "We come out and it's like a shock to our system that they are throwing haymakers. Until we compete, our results won't change."
Augillard's 35 points broke his former career-best of 30 set back in November of 2024 against Sacramento State. The total also marks the third-most in a game by a member of the MKE roster in over 20 years – with only BJ Freeman scoring more (outings of 43 and 38) since January of 2005.
Josh Dixon added 13 points, and
Stevie Elam recorded 11 points, grabbing six rebounds to round out the top scorers for the visitors.
Sekou Konneh recorded a game-high 11 rebounds and chipped in seven points and a pair of blocks.
Mikale Stevenson led the Mastodons with a career-high 34 points of his own, finishing 6-of-10 from downtown. DeAndre Craig had 20 points/8 boards, and Corey Hadnot added 19 to secure the win.
The home team came out strong, leading 11-2 before the Panthers settled in. Seven unanswered cut the margin to 16-15 and an Elam three made it a one-point hole at 21-20.
The 'Dons extended the margin back to 33-24, yet MKE had an early answer. Augillard kept making shots and his triple capped an 8-3 run and had the team back within four at 36-32, scoring 18 in the first half.
The second half did not go quite as well, with Purdue Fort Wayne slowly taking a 57-44 lead – its largest of the day at the time, before pulling further away in the 100-82 final score.
Milwaukee did shoot 48.3 percent (29-of-60) from the floor overall and 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from deep but was countered by 56.3 percent (36-of-64) shooting overall and 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from distance by Purdue Fort Wayne.
Up next, the Panthers remain on the road and travel to Robert Morris next, taking on the Colonials Jan. 22. Game time is set for 6 p.m. CT.
