Milwaukee MSOC Suffers Tough 1-0 Loss At Bradley

Team played well despite result

PEORIA, Ill. – Drew Barry made 11 saves – including a stellar effort on an 89th-minute bicycle kick – to help Bradley hand the Milwaukee men's soccer team a hard-luck 1-0 loss Thursday night at Shea Stadium.

The Panthers (0-2-1) made things difficult for the Braves (1-1-1) all evening but could not find a way to break through against Barry, who made several spectacular stops during his career-best performance, topped by stopping Fernando Pirry's pretty equalizer attempt in the closing minutes.

The game was very defensive from the start, seeing the MKE offense get the first few quality chances. Bienvenu Djunga had a good look in the 18th minute but went wide, and again in the 39th minute that was stopped in front.

A scoreless affair at intermission, the Panthers kept firing: Dominic Zuniga laced a blast from distance that was solidly stopped. The preceding corner kick then produced another good chance, only to see Barry make a great save with a sprawling stop at the post on an attempt from Zuniga again in the 48th.

The home side finally broke through in the 49th minute to grab that 1-0 lead. Barry did the rest, making impressive stop after impressive stop to earn the clean sheet.

Praise Ogwu nearly snuck one by the keeper after lacing a loose ball in the box on net in the 55th minute before Daiki Kumakawa forced another tough save from distance in the 64th. Milwaukee got a decent look on a corner kick in the 85th, but Pirry was denied again.

Barry saved his best for last, somehow knocking a picture-perfect bicycle kick from Pirry wide at the 88:12 mark to preserve the clean sheet and the win for the Braves.

For the contest, the Panthers finished with advantages of 19-15 in total shots, 11-6 in shots on goal, and 7-5 in corner kicks in addition to the small majority of possession. Djunga led the offense with five shots; Pirry was second with four. In goal, Nic Diana was credited with five saves in the hard-luck decision.

Up next, the team returns home for three games to open the month of September, starting with a contest against Eastern Illinois Sept. 5. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
