MKE Tennis Postseason Run Halted In Semifinals By YSU

Panthers come up just short of championship appearance


ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Milwaukee women's tennis team had its upstart run in the postseason ended Saturday afternoon by Youngstown State in the Horizon League Championships from the Varsity Tennis Center.
 
The Panthers (8-17) were looking for a second straight upset victory and a chance at the finals but came up short against the Penguins (13-7). With the 4-0 decision, YSU improves to 31-13 all-time in the HLT postseason and will make an appearance in the title match for the 10th time in the past 11 seasons Sunday.
 
"Still very proud of the team this season," head coach Mark Goldin said. "Despite the ups and downs and the injuries we had to overcome, we still had such a fun year. Looking ahead, we are excited about the recruiting class coming in for next fall. We are ready to come back even stronger next season."
 
Milwaukee had a strong start to the day and nearly came away with the doubles point. Laure Razet and Nikola Nikolajeva teamed up at No. 2 for a strong 6-2 decision over Line Greyling and Lili Minich to force a deciding match at No. 3 for the point. Despite a strong effort, Emilia Durska and Giorgia Cavestro eventually fell in the 6-3 decision.
 
Facing a Penguins' lineup that went 28-8 in singles matches in regular-season league play this spring, the Panthers had their work cut out for them. It went the way of the Guins, getting victories at No. 6, 1, and then 5 to close out the match.
