MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women's tennis team started the day with the doubles point but was unable to close out the match, falling by a final score of 4-3 Friday afternoon at River Glen Elite.
 
The Panthers (7-15, 1-4 Horizon League) got off to a strong start against the Jaguars (3-10, 1-4 Horizon League), coming back in the third match of doubles to earn the doubles point. The Jags responded well, earning enough decisions in singles play to pick up the important win in conference play.
 
"This was a very tough loss, but the girls fought hard all day," head coach Mark Goldin said. "We will use this as a learning experience and need to get ready for another big match tomorrow."
 
Nadiia Konieva and Sara Simonova got things going in doubles, winning at No. 1 by a convincing 6-2 scoreline. Courts two and three were tight, and the Panthers pulled out the point when Giorgia Cavestro and Nikola Nikolajeva rallied from a mid-match deficit to topple Emma Dell and Hanan Awale, 7-5.
 
In singles, IU Indy came out and claimed four matches in which control went to the visitors. Milwaukee got results from Nikolajeva at No. 2 (6-3, 6-2 over Chloe Bailey) and from Honoka Yamashita at No. 6 (6-2, 6-4 over Awale) but it was not enough after the Jags closed out the clincher at No. 3 by a final score of 7-5, 6-2 to take the closely-contested 4-3 decision.
 
The Panthers will wrap up regular-season action Saturday, set to host Northern Kentucky at River Glen Elite. The match will get underway at 11:30 a.m. and will also serve as "Senior Day" for lone MKE senior Giorgia Cavestro.
