MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee baseball team produced 14 hits, including three apiece from
Justin Hausser and
Tate Schmidt, as the Panthers won the weekend set from Oakland by a 10-7 score on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Panthers led early but fell behind to the Golden Grizzlies in the middle innings, 5-2, before putting together a five-run bottom of the sixth to give Milwaukee the lead for good in a back-and-forth affair.
Â
Teige Lethert led off the sixth with a walk and moved to second on a bunt by
Thomas Otto. Schmidt brought Lethert around with a double before
Q Phillips connected on his third home run of the season.
Gabe Roessler doubled and Hausser followed with a three-base hit before
Tyler Bickers capped off the inning with an RBI single up the middle.
Â
"We got up a little bit, but Oakland came back, but our guys just kept fighting at the plate," said head coach
Shaun Wegner after the game. "We stayed on it and got to their bullpen a little bit … our bullpen as the game went on gave us the opportunity to come back."
Â
Keagon Kaufmann earned his first win of the season as he did not allow an earned run over 2 2/3 innings before
Logan Snow came on and tossed 2 1/3 hitless innings with three strikeouts.
Â
"Kaufmann held us in check in the game too as much as we needed it," added Wegner. "Then we were able to hand it off to Logan, who has been so crucial for us and what we've been trying to build here."
Â
Charlie Marion got the scoring started for Milwaukee to open the game in the first inning off Oakland starter Tanner Ware, who did not factor into the decision.
Â
The Grizzlies scored the next five runs in the game off Panther starter
Logan Schulfer and
Mason Weckler to take the 5-2 advantage.
Â
Schmidt got his first RBI of the game with a double to bring
Caden Headlee home in the fourth. A few batters later, Schmidt and Otto both scored on a wild pitch that wound up near the third base dugout to tie the score at five.
Â
Oakland scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth before the Panthers scored their five in the bottom half of the inning. The Grizzlies scored another unearned marker in the seventh off Kaufmann before Snow came on and recorded a strikeout to strand the bases full.
Â
Snow ultimately retired seven in a row to finish off the win and earn his second save. Weckler struck out a team-best six batters including all three outs in the third inning.
Â
John Lauinger and Matthew McGann each drove in two runs apiece, while Boston Halloran had two of Oakland's eight hits on the day. Jason Easterlin pitched a pair of scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth for the visiting side.
Â
Milwaukee will welcome non-conference UIC to Franklin Field on Tuesday afternoon for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch. The game will be available on ESPN+ as well as the audio-only stream on both the Varsity App and the Black & Gold Network.
