Panthers Downed in Second Game of Kansas Series

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Seven Jayhawks had multi-hit games as host Kansas scored 21 unanswered runs in a 21-3 win over the Milwaukee baseball team on Friday afternoon.

Gabe Roessler and Tyler Bickers headed the Panther offense with home runs, as Bickers led Milwaukee with a pair of hits and two RBIs on the afternoon.

Gavin Theis got the start for the Panthers and did not factor into the decision as he allowed three runs over four innings of work. He finished the game with a career-high six strikeouts.

Milwaukee jumped on Kansas starter Dominic Voegele as Roessler sent the fourth pitch of the day over the left field fence. After Tate Schmidt singled, Bickers took a pitch over the right centerfield fence to give Milwaukee a 3-0 lead through the first three batters.

Staked to a three-run lead, Theis allowed the first two runners on base but got the next two before a walk loaded the bases. The Milwaukee right-hander struck out the next batter to strand the bases full of Jayhawks.

The bottom of the second was highlighted by a dazzling defensive play as Bickers moved to his right and snagged a ball up the middle. Unable to make the throw against his body, he flipped the ball to Roessler, who barehanded the ball moving towards first to retire the first batter of the inning.

Kansas scratched across a two-out run in the second inning before Theis retired the Jayhawks in order in the third. A leadoff single and a two-run home run tied the game for the home side to level the score at three.

In the fifth, the Jayhawks scored eight and added 10 more runs to finish off the scoring at 21-3. Kansas finished the game with 25 hits including a five-hit and four-RBI afternoon for Brady Ballinger. Jackson Hauge had a four-hit day and drove in three, while Derek Cerda had five RBIs and Brady Counsell added a four-RBI games.

Voegele struck out six Panthers over the first five innings of work as he earned the victory. Four Jayhawk relievers combined to keep Milwaukee scoreless over the final four innings.

Tyler Andrews threw 1 1/3 innings for Milwaukee out of the bullpen and struck out one Kansas Batter allowing one run.

Milwaukee and Kansas will play game three of the four-game set on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The scene will shift to Wichita, Kansas at Equity Bank Park (formerly Riverfront Stadium), home of the Wichita Wind Surge, due to the Kansas Men's Basketball game taking place at Allen Fieldhouse next door to Hoglund Ballpark.
