LAS VEGAS – The UNLV Rebels scored six in the bottom of the first and finished off a four-game sweep of the Milwaukee Panthers on Sunday afternoon, recording a 14-4 win at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
Â
Elijah Rodriguez and Cooper Sheff combined for seven RBIs out of the top two spots of the Rebel lineup as UNLV had 12 hits and drew seven walks on the afternoon against Milwaukee pitching.
Â
Milwaukee got a pair of RBIs from
Charlie Marion, while
Ben Buehring added his first RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly. The Panthers collected five hits on the day including knocks by Marion,
Tate Schmidt,
Tyler Bickers,
Caden Headlee and
Cade Palkowski.
Â
"We faced some really tough hitter-friendly conditions today but were not able to capitalize on the offensive side," said head coach
Shaun Wegner. "UNLV was able to take advantage on some of the free bases we gave and made them hurt with a few long balls."
Â
Mike Sullivan allowed the first six runs all in the first inning for UNLV before
Keagon Kaufmann came on for the next 2 2/3 frames.
Â
Down by seven, the Panthers got two runs back in the top of the third as Marion walked with the bases loaded, while
Justin Hausser got a run across on a ground ball double play.
Â
After a scoreless fifth inning for both sides, Milwaukee scored one in the sixth on Buehring's sacrifice fly to chase home
John Hadley who had walked to lead off the inning.
Â
UNLV scored three more in the bottom half of the sixth to take a 14-3 lead.
Riley Peterson allowed three inherited runners to cross, charged to
Zach Dohrmann who had pitched the previous two-plus innings.
Â
Looking to avoid the run rule, Milwaukee only got one run back in the seventh after Schmidt led off the frame with a single and came around to score on Marion's double.
Â
Reese Lueck earned the win, pitching the first five innings for UNLV and was charged for two runs. Two Rebel relievers closed out the game tossing one inning apiece.
Â
"This was a disappointing weekend especially with our fight today," Wegner added. "We have five games coming at us quick this week, so we don't have time to waste. We need to find ways to relax and get back to paying free and easy baseball … the results will come if we stay focused on the process and our execution."
Â
Milwaukee will travel to U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis to take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Tuesday evening, with first pitch slated for 6:00 p.m.
