Milwaukee Baseball Tripped Up in Rubber Match at Mercer

MACON, Ga. – The Milwaukee baseball team wrapped up its first weekend of the 2025 season with a loss to the Mercer Bears by a 10-3 score at OrthoGeorgia Park on Sunday.

Camden Kuhnke hit his second home run of the season to get Milwaukee's offense started, while Justin Hausser and Q Phillips each collected RBIs for the Panther offense. Milwaukee was held to just five hits on the day, including the first collegiate hit for Bradyn Horn.

"We really did not execute enough in any of the phases of the game today to deserve a victory," said head coach Shaun Wegner. "Offensively, Kuhnke was able to give us a jolt and we were able to put together some late at bats but ultimately we were non-competitive in the middle of that game."

Mike Sullivan made his first start for the Panthers and allowed a first inning run before settling down. He stranded a pair of runners in the second to bring the Panthers back up to bat.

Kuhnke hit a leadoff home run to tie the score at one before Horn attacked early and doubled to left centerfield. A pair of groundouts allowed Horn to cross the plate and gave Milwaukee the 2-1 advantage after 2 1/2 innings.

Mercer tied the score right back on a wild pitch in the next half-inning, before Sullivan shut down the Bears in the fourth and finished the game pitching four innings with three strikeouts while allowing the first two Mercer runs.

"Sully competed on the bump for us and gave us a strong four innings," said Wegner on Sullivan. "Mercer's offense put together an a really good fifth inning against us utilizing all aspects of the offensive game."

The home team scored five runs off Milwaukee's bullpen in the fifth to take the lead and added three insurance runs to extend their advantage en route to the win.

Logan Snow pitched 1 2/3 hitless innings out of the bullpen for Milwaukee, while Zach Dohrmann struck out two as he pitched a hitless seventh frame for the Panthers.

"We got some needed appearances in with some of our bullpen arms and saw how they competed against outside opponents," Wegner concluded. "We will get in a few days of concentrated practice as we look ahead to our next series."

Milwaukee will head back to the southeast next weekend to open a three-game series with South Carolina. The Panthers and Gamecocks will begin the set at 3:00 p.m. on Feb. 21 at Founders Park. All three games are scheduled to appear on SEC Network+, which is available on ESPN+, but requires a cable subscription upon login.
