Fast Start by Milwaukee Thwarted by IU Indy in Weekend Opener

INDIANAPOLIS – Ella Schuetz and Milica Tomic each recorded double-doubles but it was not enough as the Milwaukee volleyball team fell to the IU Indy Jaguars by a 3-1 score on Friday evening.

For Schuetz, it was her first career double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs, while Tomic tallied 18 assists and 10 digs for her first of the season and 11th of her career. Natalie Schmitz led the team with 14 kills, while Josie Noble had nine kills.

Bella Lipski put together a strong showing with six kills and four blocks, as the Panthers finished the match with six blocks up front. Kara Erdmann led the Black & Gold with a team-high 24 digs in the effort, while Josie Johnson chipped in with 16 assists.

Milwaukee got out to an incredibly fast start with 13 kills in the opening set against one error as the Panthers hit .429 en route to a 25-17 win in the opener. Schuetz and Lipski each had three kills apiece while Josie Noble had a service ace.

"Overall tonight was a really competitive match," commented head coach Susie Johnson. "We started off strong and were executing our game plan well … but little by little they crept back in and put a lot of pressure on us."

IU Indy took the second set with a 25-18 score as Milwaukee connected on just a .143 hitting percentage, committing a match-worst seven hitting errors. A competitive third set saw the Jaguars edge out Milwaukee, 26-24, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Jaguars put together an impressive fourth set, doubling up Milwaukee in kills, 16-8, using a 10-2 run midway through to turn a one-point deficit into a seven-point advantage. IU Indy closed out the match by winning six of the final seven points to take the set, 25-16.

"We'll learn from tonight's effort and look to respond with a better result tomorrow," Johnson added.

Four players for the Jaguars had at least 10 kills including team leader Jillian Tippmann, who had a match-high 17, while also leading with two aces and four blocks. Grace Purichia had 53 assists, and Laura Roeder had 20 digs to pace in their respective categories.

Milwaukee and IU Indy will meet again at 1:00 p.m. (CT) on Saturday afternoon inside The Jungle as the Panthers will look to split the weekend series with the Jaguars.
