MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Milwaukee men's soccer team overcame a pair of one-goal deficits to record a 2-2 draw against Robert Morris Saturday afternoon at North Athletic Complex.
The Panthers (3-6-7, 2-1-4 Horizon League) trailed the Colonials (4-2-7, 2-0-5 Horizon League) by scores of 1-0 and 2-1, finding the equalizer for the second time on a penalty kick by
Angel Gongora in the 78
th minute.
The defense held on down the stretch, turning away a final corner kick in the closing seconds to secure the tie. Goalkeeper
Nic Diana punched the attempt away from the front of net and
Paul Denz blocked the final RMU shot attempt as the clock went to zeroes.
The Milwaukee offense came out quicker on the day, with
Jack Bretzmann recording the first two shot attempts, one a blast from distance that was pushed just over the bar.
The home side took advantage of a fortunate bounce to get on the scoreboard, as a crossing pass was deflected by the MKE defense and found the back of the net to make it 1-0 at the 9:38 mark.
Both teams combined for just nine shots over the first 45 minutes, as the score remained 1-0 at the break.
The Panthers regrouped and made it a new game quickly in the second half, with Bretzmann heading in
Dominic Zuniga's corner kick to make it 1-1 just 61 seconds into the second half.
It stayed that way just a short time, until the 50
th minute, with the Colonials again taking advantage of a deflection. A corner was played short, seeing Riley Cotton's one-timer get deflected by a Panther head and into the upper corner to make it 2-1 at the 49:55 mark.
The offense then found a way, talking advantage of a foul called when
Bienvenu Djunga was knocked off his feet after making his way into the 18-yard box. Gongora stepped to the spot and rifled a blast into the net for his fourth of the season at the 77:21 mark.
That was the way it would end after the final MKE defensive stand, with most game stats also finishing close. RMU had the 14-10 advantage in total shots, with the Panthers the 3-2 edge in shots on goal. The home side also had seven of the 12 corner kicks and 54 percent possession. Bretzmann paced Milwaukee with four shot attempts.
Up next, the team closes out the regular season with a pair of home matches, next taking the field when it hosts Northern Kentucky Friday. Game time against the Norse is set for 5 p.m. in a game that will also be "Senior Night".
