Raiders Stun Panthers With Tying Goal In Closing Seconds

Teams play to a 2-2 draw at home

MILWAUKEE – Olivia Stroud scored with just eight seconds remaining in regulation to help Wright State pull out a stunning 2-2 draw against the Milwaukee women's soccer team Sunday afternoon at Engelmann Stadium.

The Panthers (10-4-3, 7-0-2) trailed the Raiders (6-6-4, 3-1-4 Horizon League) early in the match but overcame the deficit to eventually lead 2-1 on an Olimpico goal from Kristina Karlof in the 51st minute.

Despite opportunities to put the visitors away, the scoreboard remained at 2-1 the rest of the way. With the clock closing in on zeroes, Stroud took a pass in the box and turned and fired a shot into the upper corner of the goal to silence the "Senior Day" crowd and help the Raiders escape with the draw.

"It took them scoring on us to wake us up and get us going and that's not the first time this has happened and I don't like it," head coach Kevin Boyd said. "That's not the way this should work – we should come out on fire, especially at home – and you add in 'Senior Day', that should be an extra boost. But I don't know if there's too much going on beforehand that we are emotionally tired before the game starts. I was not pleased with our performance today – I thought we were a step slow the entire time."

The home side took a while to get going and responded once it found itself trailing for just the second time in a league game this season after WSU netted a strike from distance in the 23rd minute.

It didn't take long for MKE to equalize, with Lola Wojcik one-timing in a well-placed pass from Mallory McGuire for her sixth of the season at the 28:43 mark. Ellie Rebmann was also credited with an assist on the play, finding McGuire in the middle of the field.

The offense cranked up production, recording seven shot attempts over the next six minutes of game time, with only a WSU team save halting what would have been a goal by Ashlyn Skinner-Barrett in the 32nd minute. Despite the heavy barrage, the contest went to the break even at 1-1.

"I thought we got a nice boost, specifically from those forwards that came in (Emily Petring and Ashlyn Skinner-Barrett) and then Abby (Stoeck) coming into the midfield helped our midfield out," Boyd said. "I thought that made a big difference."

The Panthers went ahead in the 51st minute on a spectacular goal, with Karlof depositing the corner kick attempt inside the far post for her fifth of the season – and the first Olimpico goal for the program since Erin Corrigan did so twice during the 2018 campaign.

That 2-1 lead looked to be enough until the closing seconds, denying the Panthers the opportunity to clinch at least a share of the Horizon League regular-season title for the fifth consecutive season. The draw does, however, extend the team's league-record unbeaten streak in regular-season play to 38 (30-0-8).

"We give up a goal with eight seconds left … that's just poor management of the game," Boyd said. "Now we are in a spot where we have to win our final game."

For the match, WSU did end up with the 18-17 edge in shots, while MKE posted an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal and 7-1 in corner kicks. McGuire paced the offense with six shots attempts. In goal, Bella Hollenbach finished the afternoon with four saves.

The Panthers follow up next week on the league bye before concluding the regular season at home against Green Bay on Wednesday, October 29. Game time against the Phoenix is set for 7 p.m., with a victory clinching the regular-season championship for the program.
