DAYTON, Ohio – The Milwaukee women's soccer team continued its hot start to Horizon League play, posting its second consecutive clean sheet to open the league slate with a 3-0 victory over Wright State Sunday at Alumni Field.
The Panthers (3-6-1, 2-0 Horizon League) added a pair of second-half goals to their 1-0 advantage over the Raiders (2-6-1, 0-1-1 Horizon League) at the break, controlling the match from start to finish to extend their unbeaten streak in regular-season play to 21 consecutive (16-0-5) games.
"Good result for us, obviously the second game of a double weekend on the road is always a hard game," head coach
Kevin Boyd said. "So coming into this Sunday game, I thought we did quite well. We were definitely the aggressor on the day when it came to trying to get chances. Not to take anything away from Wright State – I thought they kept it tight with us for quite a while, probably until the 61
st minute when we got that second goal and that kind of sealed it. But the rest of the time it was a very good game."
After an opening keyed by the defense, the offense took over after
Kayla Rollins started the scoring with a penalty kick in the 32
nd minute.
It was
Parker Donahugh in net on display first, making four solid saves over the course of the first 11:43 of the afternoon. The MKE offense got going after that, recording the next four shot attempts before Rollins converted from the spot.
Up 1-0 at the half, the team doubled the lead at the 60:23 mark when Kristia Karlof headed in a free kick from
Lola Wojcik.
In the 74
th,
Elizabeth Reece tallied her second of the season to round out the scoring.
"The PK by Kayla, I think that was on our fourth or fifth breakaway at that point," Boyd said. "Second half, off a set piece, Kristina gets up and puts one away with her head which is outstanding. And then the last goal, Liz pops one back post over the top of the crowd, hit the keeper's hands, and went in. It was just so well-placed ball by Liz."
The defense did the rest, limiting Wright State to just two shots in the second half and only four total over the final 78 minutes of the day. Donahugh added her second shutout of the week, finishing with four saves.
"We secured the shutout, which was a big objective of our ours," Boyd said. "We were happy to get quite a few players in and nice team effort for us on the road so … two shutouts, good way to start conference at 2-0."
The MKE offense concluded the day with advantages of 22-8 in shots, 13-4 in shots on goal, 5-2 in corner kicks, and 53 percent of possession on the day.
Zoey Pagels led the charge with a game-high six shot attempts off the bench, including a would-be goal that was cleared off the line by a WSU team save in the 73
rd minute.
Lainey Higgins was next with four.
Up next, the Panthers will host their home league opener Thursday, welcoming Oakland to Engelmann Stadium. Game time against the Golden Grizzlies is set for 7 p.m.
