IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Milwaukee baseball team outhit the Iowa Hawkeyes by an 11-8 margin on Tuesday evening, but it was not enough as the Hawkeyes built up an early lead and won the non-conference matchup by a 12-6 score.
Â
The Hawkeyes took advantage of nine Milwaukee walks and four hit batters, as Iowa was led by Blake Guerin, who put the finishing touches on Iowa's offensive output with a three-run home run to lead the team with three RBIs on the night.
Â
"We did not help ourselves on the mound today with the amount of free passes we handed out," said
Shaun Wegner post game. "Especially with the timing of many of them."
Â
Sean Tillmon led the Panthers with three hits on the night including two doubles, while
Carson Hansen added to his league-leading double total with another pair of two-base hits on Tuesday. Tillmon and
Tyler Bickers led Milwaukee with two RBIs apiece, while
Camden Kuhnke scored two runs.
Â
"We gave up too many strikeouts when we fell away from our approach offensively," Wegner added. "We found some runs and big RBIs but couldn't overcome the peril we created for ourselves."
Â
Riley Peterson got the start for the Panthers and made it through the first 2 1/3 innings before classmate
Cole Spitzer came on and pitched three scoreless innings. Three other Panther pitchers finished the final 2 2/3 innings.
Â
Milwaukee took an early 1-0 lead with a first-inning run as Tillmon was hit by the first pitch of the game and later scored on a ground ball out by Hansen. Iowa answered back with a four spot in the bottom of the first including a two-run triple by Michael Seegers.
Â
Teige Lethert reached with one down in the second and later scored on a double by Tillmon to slice the Iowa lead in half at 4-2.
Â
After Iowa added a pair of scores in the third, Tillmon drove in another run in the fourth inning to plate Kuhnke as Milwaukee trailed 7-3.
Â
Spitzer held the productive Iowa lineup in check over the ensuing innings, while Milwaukee stranded three runners on base over that span. The Panthers ended the game with 13 runners left on base.
Â
Bickers led off the seventh with a four-pitch walk and stole second before moving up to third on a ground ball,
Q Phillips came up and plated Bickers with a single to right center.
Â
Iowa scored two more in the bottom of the seventh to gain a 9-4 advantage ahead of two more Milwaukee runs courtesy of a two-run single up the middle off the bat of Bickers.
Â
Guerin launched the three-run blast for the home team in the bottom of the eighth to cap off the scoring at 12-6.
Â
Milwaukee threatened in the ninth with three runners on with two down including the first Milwaukee hit by
Ben Buehring, but the Panthers were unable to capitalize as the Hawkeyes picked up the win.
Â
It was all hands on deck for the Iowa pitching staff as Aaron Savary got his fourth win of the season, allowing just an unearned run in the first inning. Nine pitchers took the mound for Iowa, with only Bengamin DeTaeye recording the save and was the only pitcher to retire more than three batters as he got the final four.
Â
Milwaukee heads back home on Friday afternoon to take on the Northern Kentucky Norse at Franklin Field with the first game set to begin at 3:05 p.m. at Franklin Field.
